The eyes are in proportion to the character’s face and all hair colors seem to be more or less natural looking but that may be more of a forced decision due to the more muted color palette of Ghost in the Shell (1995) versus the more vibrant color palette of later releases in the franchise like the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex where Motoko Kusanagi’s hair is purple. Design wise Ghost in the Shell (1995) seems to take great pride in how close the character design is to being anatomically correct, even going so far as to get into some of the finer details of human muscle structure. The reason I chose it above any other film is because it is cited as a major influence on some of the greatest Hollywood blockbusters of my youth such as The Matrix (1999) where it is said Larry and Andy Wachowski played Ghost in the Shell (1995) as part of their film pitch for The Matrix saying “We wanna do that for real.” James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino all list Ghost in the Shell (1995) as a film that has had a major impact on their films as well. Audiences are more willing to accept more outrageous character design such as exaggerated proportions, wild hair colors, or even fashion.

The fact Anime is animated rather than live action allows for a greater level of surrealism and extreme violence. Most Anime character design follows the same basic principles of large eyes that were inspired by Disney’s character designs and the body proportions are more or less supposed to be in line with realistic body proportions. Most Anime begins life as Manga, or Japanese comic books, it is here where the basics of the character design, plot, and character building happens. Astro Boy set the basic foundation for how all other Anime was to be written, produced, and stylized. The emergence of what is recognizable as the archetype for modern Anime came in 1963 with Astro Boy. Japanese Anime can trace its roots back to a 1917 short where a Samurai tries to test out his sword.

So much so that 60% of all Japanese film production is made up of Anime films. So with this new found understanding I wanted to take a look at a classic Anime that was very well received and that I have never seen with a better appreciation for the maturity the medium can show.Anime films are massively popular throughout Japan and around the world. I can now look at an Anime and understand where certain aspects come from and how it all comes together. I chose to write my paper on Japanese Anime.
